Cape Coast Excursion - Echoes of the Slave Trade

This day trip to Cape Coast is a historically significant region approximately a 3-hour drive from Accra. This excursion will focus on the history of the transatlantic slave trade.

Key sites include:

  • Assin Manso Slave Market & River Site: Before reaching the coast, you will visit Assin Manso, a crucial site in the history of the slave trade. This was the final major slave market where captives from the north were brought for selection and branding before their journey to the coastal castles. You will also see the “Slave River” (Nnonkoo), where enslaved Africans had their last bath and any signs of their origins washed away before being marched to the dungeons. This site offers a powerful and sobering perspective on the final stages of the inland slave trade.
  • Cape Coast Castle: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this imposing fortress played a crucial role in the slave trade. Explore the dungeons, learn about the horrific conditions endured by enslaved Africans, and reflect on this dark chapter of history. The guided tour will provide powerful insights.
  • Elmina Castle: Another UNESCO World Heritage site located a short distance from Cape Coast Castle. Elmina is the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa and served as a major slave trading post. Witness the “Door of No Return” and understand the profound impact of the slave trade.
