Audra Bohannon on Building Relationships that Empower
At OneWe Reach, connection is more than a value, it’s the foundation of our mission. We believe that lasting social impact begins with people: how we engage, how we collaborate, and how we lift one another.
That message came vividly to life when Audra Bohannon, Founder of Bohannon Advisory, took the stage at day two of the OneWe Reach 9th Annual Conference.
As a nationally recognized expert in human potential and belonging, Audra has spent more than 30 years helping individuals and organizations strengthen their relationships and create environments where everyone can thrive. Her session on Sponsorship, Mentorship, and Allyship captured the very essence of our conference theme: Love. Lead. Lift.
“You can’t be a mentor, a sponsor, or an ally,” she said, “if you don’t first understand the power of relationships.”
For Audra, relationships are not transactions, they are the heartbeat of belonging. They grow out of shared values, trust, and the courage to show up authentically for others.

Relationships: The Foundation of Everything
Audra began by reminding the audience that no one achieves success alone.
“You cannot be successful without having a community. If you choose to go it alone, it will compromise your growth and your ability to soar.”
She encouraged attendees to reflect on their closest connections, to identify who brings them energy (and who drains it), and to be intentional about nurturing the relationships that truly matter.
“Do you have a short list of people you’d go to the mat for? And are you spending enough time with them, or too much time with people who leave you empty?”
Her message was clear: meaningful relationships take time, attention, and care. They are the soil from which opportunity and collaboration grow.
Love vs. Support: Knowing the Difference
In a moment of heartfelt honesty, Audra explained the distinction between love and support.
“Love is unconditional. Support is conditional. People can love you and still choose not to support you, and you have to be okay with that.”
That truth resonated throughout the room. Audra reminded everyone that while love connects us emotionally, support helps move us forward. Understanding both, she said, is key to building authentic relationships that last.
Be Ready for What You Seek
Audra then turned the conversation toward personal accountability.
“Are you sponsor ready? Mentor ready? Ally ready?” she asked. “Because when you’re ready, you become attractive. People will see your excellence and want to invest in you.”
Rather than asking someone to take on the role of mentor or sponsor, Audra encouraged attendees to demonstrate their readiness through action.
“Do so much that people want to come and take care of you. Show up in a way that makes them want to be part of your story.”
Her advice served as a powerful reminder that preparation and purpose draw people in and that leadership begins with how we present ourselves to the world.
From Familiarity to Trust
To illustrate how relationships evolve, Audra shared a relatable example: a favorite coffee shop.
At first, you just order your drink. But over time, you exchange names, share small talk, and build comfort. Before long, that familiarity deepens into genuine trust.
“When you have trust, that’s when mentorship, sponsorship, and allyship begin to flourish.
Trust, she said, is the foundation of belonging. It transforms casual connections into supportive relationships that open doors and inspire growth.
Leading with Heart
As Audra concluded her talk, she offered a simple truth that perfectly captured the spirit of her message:
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”
She looked around the audience and continued,
“That’s where you build it — here,” she said, placing her hand over her heart. “That’s where relationships begin. That’s where they sustain. And that’s where you learn to leverage them.”
Her words reflected the spirit of OneWe Reach, a community where connection fuels purpose and belonging drives social impact.
